Connick’s Concert in Trouble in China

Compiled by LAWRENCE VAN GELDER

Harry Connick Jr. said on Thursday he was forced to make last-minute changes in his Shanghai concert last weekend because an old song list was submitted by mistake to the Chinese authorities to obtain a performance permit, The Associated Press reported. The authorities insisted that he play the songs on the list, although his band didn’t have the music for them. “Due to circumstances beyond my control,” Mr. Connick, above, said in a statement, “I was not able to give my fans in China the show I intended.” The concert was the latest to run afoul of the Chinese authorities. At a recent concert in Shanghai the Icelandic singer Bjork shouted “Tibet! Tibet!” after her song “Declare Independence,” prompting authorities to threaten to treat foreign performers more strictly.
