Soul superstar Aretha Franklin has passed away.

A statement from her publicist confirmed the 76-year-old Queen Of Soul passed away in Detroit whilst surrounded by friends and family.

Aretha had been dealing with numerous health problems over the past few years. This led to the singer announcing her retirement from performing in February 2017.

Her last live performance was Elton John’s charity gala in November last year, she explained why to a Detroit radio station: “I must tell you, I am retiring this year. “I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from and where it is now.”

Her stellar career saw her gain 16 Top 40 singles on the UK’s Official Singles Chart, and her duet with George Michael, I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me), was her only UK Number 1 in 1987.
